Visit France’s first offshore wind farm
Missing out on the Saint-Nazaire wind farm while visiting the Atlantic Loire Valley? Unthinkable! The first French offshore wind farm, operational since late 2022 and managed by EDF Renewables, consists of 80 wind turbines positioned between 12 and 20 km off the Loire-Atlantique coast. With a total output of 480 MW, the farm can supply the equivalent of the annual electricity consumption of 700,000 people. It’s a unique experience that everyone should enjoy at least once!
Explore Europe’s first multi-technology offshore testing site connected to the grid
Join us at sea to explore the SEM-REV offshore testing site, operated by the OPEN-C Foundation. Created in 2023, this Foundation coordinates, develops and manages offshore testing in France to accelerate the energy transition through floating wind and marine renewable energies.
Since 2018, SEM-REV has hosted real-world tests for the first French offshore wind turbine, FLOATGEN (floating wind turbine developed by BW Idéol), along with other prototypes such as WAVEGEM (GEPS Techno’s hybrid platform). Through numerous projects conducted on site, SEM-REV has confirmed its status as a reference testing centre for marine renewable energies. Recent investments have upgraded the site to meet the industry’s development requirements. These improvements resulted in the site housing the first offshore hydrogen production platform developed by LHYFE in 2023. From 2025, a 5 MW wind turbine developed by EOLINK will also be accommodated as part of the France Atlantique project.

The Port of Saint-Nazaire: a Pioneer in Marine Renewable Energies
This is where « XXL » elements for offshore wind farms are constructed and assembled, and it is here that the first French wind farm is producing electricity from the offshore winds.
You will access a panoramic terrace that will give you a 360-degree viewpoint on the facilities of the MRE Logistics Hub. From there, you will discover the site where the electrical substations are being built, and where offshore wind farms are assembled. This hub will be used for the storage and pre-assembly of offshore wind turbines for the Yeu-Noirmoutier project. We will also take the opportunity to tell you about the future of the Port with the prefiguration of the EOLE project for the development of floating wind power.

During your visit, you’ll explore the logistics site housing the buoys belonging to AKROCEAN, a key player in the collection of wind and offshore environmental data. This iconic player in marine renewable energies in western France partners with ASi for its logistical expertise, proximity and speed of execution. On site you will discover the different buoys in the AKROCEAN FLEE with a technical presentation by the AKROCEAN and GEPS TECHNO. ASi supports maritime operations, including mooring systems, as well as process integration into containerised or modular solutions. On site, you will find covered spaces, stoned surfaces for heavy loads, accesses suitable for abnormal loads, a range of handling and storage resources, as well as mechanised welding and painting equipment.

Take a tour of the state-of-the-art facilities at Nantes Faculty of Science, combining the discovery of structures with virtual reality. During the tour, you will see facilities for simulating and monitoring the degradation of materials in a marine environment, unique in France, such as the salt fog chamber (aging of materials under the action of salt and non-salt fog) or the tidal tanks (accelerated reproduction of the tidal phenomenon in an ambient climate for medium-sized samples such as concrete blocks). A virtual showroom to dive into the underwater world and discover in real time the Biocolmar station, an offshore measuring station.
Get inside Centrale Nantes, one of France’s leading academic players in ocean engineering research. You will discover Ocean test facilities: the experimental facilities for hydrodynamics and ocean engineering are unique at academic level in terms of size and capacity. Centrale Nantes Supercomputer is one of the most powerful tier2-class machines in France with 6,000 cores. This state-of-the-art equipment is an indispensable tool for both research and industry: it reduces the cost of testing, facilitates optimization, and promotes creativity and the search for new solutions. Finally, the Composite Materials and Processes Platform that brings together a comprehensive range of equipment for the transformation of fiber-reinforced organic matrix composite materials that offer mechanical properties that combine strength, lightness and durability.
With Pilotes de la Loire, discover the largest maneuver simulator in France, a tool used by professionals as part of their training to constantly improve the safety of access to ports and the sea.
Regarding Marine Renewable Energy and especially Floating Offshore Wind Turbines, IRT Jules Verne R&D Institute dedicated to advanced manufacturing technologies, is involved in several collaborative projects among which : ZEBRA (Zero Waste Blade with industrial like Arkema, LM Windpower, Engie…) and RECIF (Industrial solutions to decrease significantly fabrication cost of floating structures with industrials like Saipem, Serimax, Vallourec…). During this visit, you will discover technological platforms and demonstrations, the Madras production line (Highrate preforming and reduced buy-to-fly) and Robots for NDT and control of large structures.
